- Make sure the Private Investigator is licensed, bonded and insured. Ask the private investigator to provide the license and the current insurance policy for your review. Learn what the state requires of every licensed private investigator in Florida.
- Look at the investigator's experience. What does he/she bring to the table? Ask for references, check if there have been any complaints filed by the licensing division.
- Will your investigator testify in court? What experience does he/she have in testifying in court? This is very important when you have spent your money in an investigation only to learn your investigator won't or can't testify in court.
- Make sure your investigator has an office. Think twice when a potential investigator only wants to meet in a public place or worse, only wants to talk to you by phone. You have no way of finding him/her when they take your money or provide you with a poor investigation. Visit the office and take note on how it is arranged. While it's not always the case, a messy or disorganized office may give you insight into the quality of the investigator's work.
- Know how to ask your needs in a clear and concise way. Prior to meeting with an investigator, do your homework. Provide all the necessary information and documentation on your request. Ask questions of the potential investigator about the best plan to get you the results you desire. Note how the investigator responds to your questions. Is he/she open to your questions and answers honestly?
- Ask about fees. Be sure you clearly understand all charges and ensure there are no hidden fees. During the course of the investigation, be sure the investigator does not exceed the agreed upon fee, without your consent. A good investigator should be able to give you a quote right a way. And be sure to get a signed contract agreeing to your discussed fees and how they are to be handled.
- Be sure the investigator will keep all aspects of your investigation confidential.
- Feel comfortable with your investigator. If he/she doesn't communicate well or understand the complexity of your investigation, you might want to consider looking for a different investigator.
- You should also be aware of an investigator that guarantees you the results you desire before ever investigating your case. No professional investigator will make that claim. There are to many variables that can hinder an investigation and there should be no guarantees. The investigator should only guarantee he/she will make a diligent effort to resolve your investigation.
